2022 Buick Encore GX

History/Overview

The Buick Encore GX is a subcompact crossover that debuted in 2020 to bolster the brand’s entry-level vehicle lineup. Despite sharing a name, the Encore GX is not mechanically or structurally related to the smaller Buick Encore.

What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year

As of early in the 2022 model year, the Encore is available only with AWD, whereas the 2021 model started out with FWD. There are also some new colour options.

Available Trims

Buick offers the Encore GX in Preferred, Select, and Essence trim levels. All use a 1.3L turbo three-cylinder engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and AWD. A Sport Touring version is marketed as a distinct trim, but it’s really an appearance package. We suspect front-wheel drive and a 1.2L base engine may rejoin the lineup later in the 2022 model year.

Standard Features

Encore GX Preferred comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, auto on/off headlights, heated front seats, a 10-way power driver’s seat, remote engine start, heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, LED fog lights and LED daytime running lights. Tech/comfort features include a six-speaker stereo, air conditioning, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, cruise control, passive keyless entry, leather-trimmed steering wheel, power windows, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone compatibility.

Encore GX’s standard safety package comprises forward collision detection with automatic braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and a following distance indicator.

Select trim brings a hands-free tailgate, roof rails, dual-zone auto A/C, and rear park assist.

Essence models gain LED headlights and taillights, a power front passenger seat, leather upholstery, and a heated steering wheel.

Key Options

An advanced tech package bundles navigation, adaptive cruise control, surround vision, and a head-up display.

The “experience Buick” pack adds a panoramic sunroof, and different wheels, and the safety package 2 includes blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

A convenience package comprises rain-sensing wipers, a rear camera mirror with washer, front parking sensors, automatic parking assist with braking, and wireless smartphone charging.

Fuel Economy

Buick’s fuel consumption estimates for the Encore GX with AWD are 9.0/8.2 L/100 km (city/highway). Natural Resources Canada also lists ratings for two FWD versions: an entry-level model with a 1.2L engine is rated for 8.0/7.6 L/100 km, and another with the 1.3L motor is ranked at 8.2/7.4 L/100 km.

Competition

As an upscale model, it would seem obvious that the Encore GX’s ostensible competitors would come from brands like BMW, Audi, Cadillac, and Mercedes-Benz. However, this little Buick makes more sense when considered against posher versions of mainstream subcompact crossovers like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30, Nissan Qashqai, Subaru Crosstrek, Volkswagen Taos, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Ford Ecosport, and the Chevrolet Trailblazer, with which the Encore GX shares its underpinnings.
